Flexi-Schooling
What is Flexi-Schooling?
Flexi-schooling is a blended approach to education, where a child receives part of their education in school and part at home. It allows families to play a more active role in their child’s learning, while still benefitting from high-quality teaching, peer interaction, and the structured environment of school.
Flexi-schooling is a legal option in England, but not an automatic entitlement. It is offered at the discretion of the school headteacher and agreed on a case-by-case basis. Arrangements are regularly reviewed to ensure they are effective for each child.
Importantly, flexi-schooling is not the same as part-time attendance due to other needs. It is a deliberate and planned educational partnership.
Why do parents choose flexi-schooling?
There are many reasons why families may choose this model:
- Parents wish to take a more active role in their child’s education.
- Children benefit from a balance of school structure and personalised home learning.
- Flexibility supports children with additional needs, such as autism, ADHD, anxiety, or chronic health issues.
- Home education is part of the family’s values, and they want to retain its benefits while accessing the resources of school.
- Children have experienced challenges in traditional school settings and need a softer, more tailored return to education.
- Parents may need to work part time but still want to remain involved in their child’s education.
Flexi-schooling can also be particularly helpful for children who are at risk of Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA), providing a bridge between home and school environments.
What does flexi-schooling look like at Stansfield Hall Primary School?
Flexi-schooling is about strong collaboration between school and families. At Stansfield Hall Primary School, it will involve:
- High-quality, face-to-face teaching during in-school days.
- Opportunities for home-based learning that complement the school curriculum.
- Flexibility in delivery while ensuring full access to the breadth of the National Curriculum.
- A strong emphasis on wellbeing, emotional safety, and the child’s voice.
We believe that every child deserves an education that works for them—not one-size-fits-all, but thoughtfully adapted and holistically supported.
A new direction launching Autumn 2025
From Autumn 2025, Stansfield Hall Primary School will begin offering flexi-schooling. This marks an exciting new chapter for our school community.
We recognise that families are seeking more personalised and flexible educational options. Many children today are not thriving within the traditional five-day school week, often due to emotional needs, learning differences, or past negative experiences. Flexi-schooling provides a compassionate and constructive alternative.
Our team is committed to designing a provision that supports academic progress, nurtures emotional wellbeing, and honours the partnership between school and home.
What will the curriculum look like?
To ensure equity for all learners, we are developing a bespoke rotational curriculum. This model guarantees that children attending on a flexi basis still access every subject area across the year.
- Full-time pupils will continue to receive a broad and balanced curriculum, taught across all five days.
- Flexi pupils will receive face-to-face lessons in all subjects during their agreed days in school.
- Home-based learning will be enriched through planning links, optional resources, and suggested activities that mirror school themes and topics.
The curriculum will be carefully mapped out to support both consistency and flexibility—ensuring children are never “left behind” due to reduced attendance days.
Partnership with parents
At Stansfield Hall, we believe that flexi-schooling can only work through trust and communication.
- We will work with each family to build a personalised, sustainable plan.
- Our school will offer clear planning and optional learning links for home education days.
- We welcome ongoing input from parents and are committed to building strong, respectful relationships.
- Families will be encouraged to share home learning experiences, which we will celebrate and build on within school.
Flexi-schooling is a true partnership—parents and educators working together to provide the best possible experience for each child.
A unique approach for a diverse community
Whilst we are a thriving, mainstream school, the care and flexibility we offer makes our approach anything but ordinary. Our focus is on nurturing confident, curious, emotionally secure learners, no matter their starting point.
Flexi-schooling allows us to:
- Respond more creatively to children’s individual needs.
- Retain pupils who might otherwise leave education due to unmet needs.
- Offer a lifeline to families seeking a more adaptable, respectful educational path.
- Support children’s progress holistically, celebrating personal strengths and talents alongside academic achievement.
